In 2018, Stefanie Lumnitz, a Geographer from Germany currently working at the European Space Agency, started her masters degree in Forestry at the University of British Columbia. When studying there, she conducted a research project called “Mapping urban trees with deep learning and street-level imagery”. Her research lead to a new software, a Python library which she named aiTree, and she published a paper describing how this library would work. She’s working on a second paper, with which she will also release the library’s source code in order to make her project open source.
On June 2020, Francisco discovered her project and felt pretty impressed by it, he had not seen anything similar before. Then, he tried to reach her out, and on July 2020, Stefanie proposed him a meeting, which allowed them to know each other and have some insights on their projects.
We at urbanforest.ai hope to help Stefanie as much as we can and to mutually collaborate as long as it is possible.
